Best Practices for Cleaning Makeup Brushes

Writer: Living for RealLiving for Real

Cleaning makeup brushes is essential for maintaining their performance and preventing bacteria buildup. Here are some best practices for cleaning your makeup brushes:

  1. Frequency:

    • Daily: Clean brushes that come into contact with liquid or cream products (foundation, concealer) after each use to avoid product buildup and contamination.

    • Weekly: Clean brushes used for powder products (eyeshadow, blush) at least once a week.

    • Deep Cleaning: Once a month, do a thorough cleaning of all brushes to ensure they're free from dirt, bacteria, and product residue.

  2. Cleaning Method:

    • Water & Soap:

      • Use lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free soap (baby shampoo works well) or a specific brush cleanser.

      • Wet the bristles of the brush (never the handle), and gently lather the soap between your fingers or on the palm of your hand.

    • Cleansing Solution: You can also use a brush cleaner designed for makeup tools, spraying it directly on the brush and wiping it clean with a paper towel.

    • Conditioner (optional): For natural hair brushes, apply a small amount of conditioner to maintain softness and prevent the bristles from drying out.

  3. Cleaning Process:

    • Wet the Bristles: Run the bristles under lukewarm water, but avoid getting the ferrule (the metal part holding the bristles) wet as this can cause the glue to break down.

    • Lather & Swirl: Add a small amount of soap to your palm or a brush cleaning pad, and gently lather the bristles. Swirl in a circular motion to break down product buildup.

    • Rinse: Rinse the brush under water until it runs clear, removing any excess soap and product.

    • Repeat if Necessary: For stubborn products like foundation, repeat the process until the water runs clear.

  4. Drying:

    • Shape the Bristles: Gently reshape the brush head after washing to maintain its shape.

    • Lay Flat or Hang: Lay the brushes flat on a clean towel to air-dry, or hang them with the bristles facing down to avoid water seeping into the ferrule and loosening the glue.

    • Avoid Drying Upright: Do not dry brushes standing upright as water may seep into the ferrule.

  5. Sanitizing (for regular use):

    • Quick Sanitizing Spray: If you're in a rush, use a makeup brush sanitizing spray. Spray on the brush and wipe it clean with a tissue or cloth.

By following these practices, your brushes will stay clean, last longer, and help maintain the quality of your makeup application.
